goldenteaset: (Gilgamesh and Enkidu)

...Better late than never, right? *gasp, wheeze* (...Half of this post spontaneously deleted itself just now, what the--?!)

Anyway, I signed up for Once Upon A Fic Exchange (which DW refuses to let me link to it in the normal way, gaaah) which did great, especially for a brand-new exchange! I'd never signed up for anything like this before, so I wasn't sure what to expect--letters, recipients, gifts and so on. And what did I get? Well, fun! :D /cheesy segue

What I made for lostinthefire:
Title: How Princess Vasilisa Got Her Silver Boat
Rating: G
Fandom: The Firebird and Princess Vasilisa, Orpheus and Eurydice
Genre: (Shippy) Gen
Relationships: Eurydice/Princess Vasilisa, Princess Vasilisa/The Young Archer, Eurydice/Orpheus/Princess Vasilisa/The Young Archer
Other Tags: Pre-Femslash, Pre-Poly, Backstory, Ghosts, POV Female Character, Crossovers & Fandom Fusions, Fairy Tale Style
Summary
Princess Vasilisa meets a ghostly Eurydice in need of assistance, and finds her heart's treasure in the bargain.

This was a lot of fun to write--how could it not? Princess Vasilisa rules the Land of Never, after all, beyond the bounds of reality while also being internally-consistant (from what we see of it in the fairy tale, anyway), and the Underworld operates similarly...either way, things are going to be interesting! And besides, we never get to see Princess Vasilisa doing her job in the main fairy tale--though we do see her being clever and saving The Young Archer's bacon, which is cool!--and she and the Tsar of Lobsters must have had some form of interaction... (I still feel a little disappointed I couldn't show Eurydice in action, but oh well, lesson learned!)

And my gift was: With Direct Eyes
Author: Pukjie_Ainsel
Rating: Not Rated
Fandom: The Epic of Gilgamesh
Catagory: Gen
Relationship: Enkidu & Gilgamesh
Characters: Enkidu, Gilgamesh, Shamhat, Siduri, Utnapishtim
Tags: Romantic Friendship, Alternate Universe Canon Divergence
Summary:
By the grace of the gods, Enkidu does not die. Surprisingly little changes.

...I've reread this probably more times than is necessary, but it's an amazing gift. I couldn't ask for better--Pukjie_Ainsel somehow managed to combine all of my prompts into a coherent fic, while also clearly doing their own thing! Especially now that I've reread the Epic, the words and story ring true and make me giddy all over again. Gilgamesh and Enkidu's relationship with each other is as much the heart of the story here as it is in the Epic, and somehow it captures everything I love about them. I especially want to give props (again, heh) to how Enkidu and Gilgamesh's relationships with Shamhat are portrayed. They're similar yet different (Enkidu and Shamhat are both equals and student-teacher, while Gilgamesh and Shamhat have more of a King/subject and younger brother/older sister dynamic without it being forced), and showcase parts of Shamhat's personality that we don't really see in canon. Basically I could squee over this forever~!

I'm definitely doing this exchange next year (unless I have too much RL stuff to do, that is). *nodnod*
